Other ways to use RSS feeds

If you do not have a webpage and would like to see up to the moment information from feeds such as CNN, CBC, Microsoft, NASDAQ or view the latest news about Michael Jackson’s movie “This Is It”, you have other options to view the RSS feeds.  They include:

  • Mobile devices – Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s Blackberry, Nokia phones and most phones will be able to provide you with a way to customize the RSS feeds that would interest you.
  • Email – nowadays there are RSS feeds that can send notifications straight to your email.  This is especially useful if your mobile device is not tied to internet permanently and you want to get the news whenever you get the web connection.
  • Portable RSS Readers – applications that you can download for your computer that would give you the control to suggest RSS feeds from a repository (a database of commonly available feeds) and also allow you to add your own.

What are RSS Feeds

RSS feeds commonly known as  “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary” are similar to sections of newspaper that reside somewhere else on the internet.

Let’s say that for a moment that you would like to keep updated on particular category of news stories on CNN.  You could visit

http://www.cnn.com/services/rss/

and notice that they have a variety of sections including “Top Stories”, “World”, “U.S.”, “Sports”, etc.

You can choose any of those feeds and have them linked to your web page by using an RSS Reader plugin (sometimes called the “RSS Aggregator”).  This way – any time whenever someone visits your web page, your webpage looks fresh because the content on your web page is automatically updated from the RSS feeds.  It is a great way to keep a site interesting for your visitors.
